![]() There should be a bend in this area with a flatter curve forward of this bend. ![]() Too flat of a rocker curve in the middle will make the board stiff.Ī key area of rocker is the area between 12 and 18 inches from the tail. Increased rocker in the middle of the board will lower the board’s drive, and slow the paddling. Too much nose rocker can also cause the tail to release prematurely when nose riding. However, increased nose rocker combined with increased nose width when paddling into a wave, will push water, making dropping into a wave more difficult. Using a long board as an example, increasing the nose rocker will cause less water to splash in the face while paddling, and decrease the chance of catching the nose while dropping into a wave or while turning. There are three primary areas of rocker: nose, middle and tail. A basic rule of surfboard design is that as the board’s nose rocker decreases, the nose width increases. Key numbers are zero (or the end of the board), 6”, 12”, 18”, 24”, and the board’s mid point. The distance from the board to the straight edge a given point is considered a rocker measurement. A long straight edge is placed on it, with the straight edge’s center matching the center of the board. This is measured on the bottom of the board. Rocker is the term for the curvature of the board from nose to tail, looking at the board’s edge. As the fins start getting too far apart with a wider tail, the rotational effect needed to turn is restricted. Increase the tail dimension, and decrease the nose width, and it will make for great turns, but the board will be slow and a poor nose rider.īoards with a three-fin set up typically have a narrower tail than single fin boards. Increase the nose width and leave the other dimensions alone and it moves the wide point forward, reducing the center curve, making it more difficult to turn. Conversely, if the nose and tail increase in width and the center remains the same, the rails become more parallel, complimenting the nose ride but decreasing the maneuverability because there is little curve to cause drag in the turn. As the board gains stability, it also gets more difficult to tip on a rail to turn. If the nose and tail remain the same and the center width increases, the board gains stability. The three measurements work in concert, and as one grows or reduces, it affects the others. Boards that are wider in the mid section are more stable but are more difficult to turn because they don’t tip up on a rail as easily as their narrower counterpart. As the tail design gets wider it becomes more and more stable but this will make it difficult to tip on an edge to turn. When the surfboard drops into a wave, a wider the tail will captures more water, thus causing better lift. The down side of this is that widening the nose adds more volume of material or swing weight in front of you while turning, so the ease of turning diminishes. For example, as the nose becomes wider, it becomes more stable to stand there. But each of the three measurements does provide its own defining contribution to the board’s performance, and with that contribution usually comes some sacrifice to another aspect of the board’s performance. These dimensions give only a general idea of the board’s shape because varying intensities on the outline curve cannot be told with just three measurements.Īlthough much of the board’s riding characteristics can be attributed to the outline, one must realize that it is simply one element in a much larger assemblage of contents that makes up the final shape. Measurements are taken one foot from the nose, at the widest point in the center section, and one foot from the tail. The outline, or plan shape is the curve that forms the outer edge of the board when observing from the top or bottom of the board.

![]() As I understand it, this is illegal because of the slight differences in the location of the Technic hole in comparison to the system stud. Yes, I am talking about attaching Technic bricks with holes to studs (on the sides of regular SNOT bricks as it turns out). You can read more about some barely legal building techniques in this other fantastic BrickNerd article. However, a few Technic bricks may have been inconvenienced and subjected to stress (in a manner that Jamie Berard likely wouldn’t approve of). They allow bricks to be offset by half a stud in one or both dimensions. These are plates that have studs located halfway between where the studs would normally be if they were on a regular plate. So, is there a way to set your bricks back by just half a stud instead of a full stud?įortunately, there is and the way is using jumper plates. ![]() Depending on the scale you are using for the tower, a full stud setback at each step may not give you as smooth of a taper as you would like. The smallest amount you can normally set back a layer of bricks relative to the layer below it is a single stud. Say you are stacking bricks to build a tower that is supposed to taper as it rises. For instance, if your first layer is a 32 x 32 baseplate, the bricks in your second layer have to be placed such that their studs line up vertically with one or more of the 32 x 32 studs in the baseplate. All the locations on this grid are separated by increments of a stud (which is the width of the basic LEGO unit-a 1 x 1 brick). For each layer of bricks you place, this grid is determined by the layer immediately below it. When you are building with LEGO, you are always working with a grid of possible locations where you can place your bricks. Here are examples of some SNOT elements that I have found to be very useful. As the LEGO system has evolved over the years, more and more elements have been added to the parts catalog to facilitate SNOT-especially brackets, bricks and plates with studs on their sides. So what is wrong with just stacking LEGO bricks and plates the normal way (one on top of the other), you may ask? Nothing really, but using SNOT techniques allows us to add details and create shapes that would otherwise not be possible from just stacking. Little did he know that SNOT (Studs Not On Top) is what we AFOLs call a technique where we turn LEGO bricks and plates on their sides and attach them to the faces of other bricks. “Oh, I just used SNOT.” I started saying without thinking twice, and before I had a chance to explain what I meant, the guy had moved away with a puzzled (and slightly disgusted) look on his face. Someone from the general public came up to me and asked how I had built the green roof in my model of 40 Wall Street. Isn’t that stud supposed to be on top? No, it’s SNOT!Ī funny thing happened at the first LEGO convention where I displayed my skyscraper models. The following new phenomena will test the limits and incompleteness of the similarity principle. Rather, it is necessary to introduce a complementary principle of dissimilarity. Nevertheless, the main purpose of this work is to demonstrate that the use of this term alone is not sufficient to understand the dynamics of grouping fully and correctly and, more generally, that it is not sufficient for a full understanding of perceptual organization occurring in the previous and in the following conditions. Some authors looked at how similarity up to a low similarity and discontinuity allowed regions to be grouped together and segmented. As proof, it is no coincidence that the similarity principle has never been challenged before (for a unique exception, see Vicario, 1998). According to Wertheimer, the similarity principle is responsible for the grouping, stating that, all else being equal, the most similar elements are grouped together creating columns, rows and oblique wholes, respectively, in Figure 1b–d.Īt first sight, Wertheimer’s description appears, immediately, to be the only possible one that is also consistent with the described outcomes. Under this condition, the new kind of grouping is playing independently and against the proximity principle, since the amplitude of diagonals interspaced between elements is longer than the horizontal/vertical ones. ![]() In the same way as before, diagonal grouping of dots can be highlighted through the contrast polarity as shown in Figure 1d. ![]() Most of the stimuli here presented are based on contrast polarity (black and white elements within a 50% gray background) since it likely elicits the strongest dissimilarity effect among elements, given the greatest luminance difference. ![]() Analogous outcomes can be obtained by making the color, the shape or other attributes of the elements dissimilar. Stated differently, the similar proximities of rows and columns can be broken by introducing dissimilarities in between them, for example, a kind of similarity different from proximity. By reversing the contrast, the salience of the two orthogonal directions is now much stronger than the one of Figure 1a. However, to break this stability, without playing with the proximity principle, it is sufficient to introduce another kind of dissimilarity among columns and rows, as illustrated, respectively, in Figure 1b,c. Easily, it follows that the salience of rows or columns can be alternatively enhanced or weakened by making the distance among them dissimilar (not illustrated). None of the two directions win however, their similarity/equality in terms of proximity imparts to the square matrix a strong sense of stability and equilibrium between the two directions. It is worth noting that the similarity/equality of proximities between rows and columns makes the perception very reversible, switching rows to columns and vice versa. Diagonal arrangements are very dissimilar and are difficult to perceive in spite of attentional efforts. In Figure 1a, the proximity groups the dots along the vertical and horizontal directions, creating a square matrix of rows and columns. The Gestalt principles of proximity and similarity: all else being equal, the closest and most-similar elements are grouped together creating an uniform square matrix ( a), columns ( b), rows ( c) and oblique arrangements ( d). The results demonstrated the necessity to introduce a principle of dissimilarity that is complementary to similarity as already studied by Gestalt psychologists. Dissimilarity was shown as a basic principle of figure–ground segregation, as a tool useful to create at will new groups and visual objects within patterns where they are totally invisible, as an attribute that is able to accentuate different shape components within the same object, as a way to distort shapes and create visual illusions, but also to reduce or annul them and, finally, to decompose, ungroup and reshape single objects. ![]() Limits and incompleteness of the similarity principle have suggested the basic, more general and stronger role of dissimilarity in perceptual grouping under a large variety of conditions. More generally, this work aims to show that the Gestalt principle of similarity alone is not sufficient for a full understanding of perceptual organization occurring both in the classical and mostly in the new phenomena here presented. The main purpose of this work is to explore the Gestalt principle of similarity and to demonstrate that the use of this term alone is not sufficient to understand the dynamics of grouping fully and correctly. ![]() Gary quickly formulated into a well-respected young player and moved around the scene and admired the greats from both close and afar. Once you know what the other side is trying to prove to the judge, you can better prepare for depositions or trial. If there is a complaint filed by one party and a counter-complaint filed by the other party, both parties may request a bill of particulars against each other. Usually, requests for bill of particulars are sent out before depositions happen, and before other forms of discovery, so that the other party has a more complete sense of the allegations against him/her. In other words, a bill of particulars is a discovery tool that can be used by a respondent to figure out what the other party is claiming happened. The respondent in a lawsuit might request a bill of particulars if the complaint has general allegations without getting into the specific details that would be necessary for the respondent to properly defend him/herself in the case. A bill of particulars is a written document in which a party has to explain the allegations in his/her complaint, or petition, in more detail. |
